The Film: Truth or Consequences is a speculative documentary about a desert town in southern New Mexico. Set in a near-future when humans are leaving Earth to colonize other planets, the film tells the story of the people who stayed. Set in the small town of Truth or Consequences, NM, the film follows five residents whose personal journeys open echoes of New Mexico’s complex history of progress. Combining observational and archival footage with experimental virtual reality animations, Truth or Consequences is a lyrical meditation on striving, loss, and finding what we’re looking for in the unlikeliest of places. The Ethereal Scarf was handwoven by Jeannie Ortiz in her home-studio in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico with a warp of organic cotton-linen and a weft of naturally dyed raw silk. The natural dyes used were locally harvested Black Walnuts and Pecan Shucks, home-grown Marigolds, Blanket Flower, Pomegranate Skins, as well as Sandalwood and Cochineal. Cochineal is a precious natural dye found on Prickly Pear cactus that has been used traditionally by the Indigenous People of the Americas. The scarf measures 78.5 inches x 29 inches.
